Below is the The Potter's School course description interspersed with additional explanation like this.
World History From a Biblical Perspective (Honors option available) The
honors option requires four additional (2 page) essays but the rest of the
course is the same as the regular world history track.
History's tapestry is a complex weave of facts and mysteries. The
analogy is of vertical threads of change over time and horizontal threads
which tie together regional comparisons. Students examine the facts of the
tapestry and look for evidence of God's mysterious and providential hand as
the weaver. Particularly in light of recent events, people across
the world are questioning the Bible's premises, asking about God's role in
history. People wonder about fundamentalist interpretations
of history and the influence of religions. To be effective world Christians
it helps us to understand the history and morality of ideas and trends that
impact our world. Religious ideologies have been tremendously
influential in world events throughout history. A "world Christian"
is not worldly, but rather has an understanding compassion for the importance
of world missions which this course tries to foster.
This course is unique in several ways:
(1) Students take a research and discovery approach to examine historical
interactions between and within cultures. Essay topics
are designed by the student in collaboration with the teacher. This
approach allows the students to pursue their own interests within the course's
framework, which follows a syllabus that is
strongly patterned after the scope and sequence of the College Board's AP
World History recommendations (even though this is not an AP course, all students
who have followed this course with the APWH exam have passed it.),
without being tied to a particular text. This is one
of the main differences between this course and the other world history class
taught at TPS by Mr. Futoran. Although both courses are taught from a Biblical
world view, student assignments rely on a more traditional textbook-based
format. The historytour.net interactive web site does not at all approach
the visual quality of the Stern's textbook (World Civilizations: Global Expanded-
AP Edition, $94), nor has the content undergone peer review by field experts.
(2) Students will analyze historical events and trends in light of God's moral, historical and future plan as revealed in the Bible, so they will research biblical principles related to the history they study. For example, all essays are thesis based and require supportive evidence from a biblical worldview.
(3) Students will contribute their work to a ministry which offers world history from a biblical perspective. The ministry is aimed to support Christian homeschoolers, evangelical missionary kids, and others seeking free educational material. Students agree to have their submissions modified and anonymously published at the discretion of the teacher. There is another website that publishes donated essays under a pseudonym in order to make revisions of the material as improvements may be necessary.
(4) All course materials are freely available from an internet-based classroom, including multimedia (audio files), readings (about 30 pages per week), quizzes (auto scored -immediate feedback), discussion forums (password protected with rubric based scoring), and creative collaborative project options. For example, reader's theater, songs, videos.... See historytour.net/tps (This is what you are seeing now!) for the course syllabus (click here) and make application (click here). With the Honor's option, this course is specifically designed to increase student readiness for success on the Advanced Placement exam in World History, which is typically taken by students in May of their 10th grade year. Students in other grades may apply. Students have tended to be in the 10th or 11th grade, but 9th graders have also been successful. Teacher: Brent Nichols
